With deepest condolences to the Scott family,
I knew Gordon since 2016. He was my first boss, in the Government of Canada. He profoundly shaped my career, and I have learned so much from him over the years. I considered him a mentor and a friend.
Over the years, after Gordon left Global Affairs Canada, we would meet for coffee at the Bridgehead on Beachwood Avenue, close to his home in Rockcliffe Park. There were a couple of instances where he did not show up, and in the summer of 2019 it occurred again. I stopped reaching out to him, and we had lost touch over the pandemic, as I moved back to Edmonton.
However in March 2023, visiting Ottawa, I reached out to him again to see how he was doing. As usual, we talked for hours. As usual, he scribbled ideas and diagrams on a looseleaf page - incomprehensible to anyone else, but I feel like I understood what he was trying to say. I cherished those scraps of paper, and that day was no different. I remember taking an hour after our conversation to write down notes and extract the key points he was raising. He often used a lot of great hockey metaphors, and told me about his old team and the time they played the big team in Ottawa. We bonded by being not from the elite centre of the country - "Rav, you and I are not fucking bureaucrats!"
We met again in April. I knew that he was diagnosed with cancer, and that day he just completed a procedure of some kind in the morning. But he did not seem tired or phased, albeit a little unshaven in retirement. He told me of his family situation. He always had very good things to say about his children, he felt really proud of them. There were times where he was remarkably open and vulnerable, despite our professional and intellectual relationship. The last time that I worked with him in December 2016, just before he left on stress leave - he looked profoundly sad and defeated, saying that he felt like at his age his body was breaking down. Seeing him again in 2023, he seemed a bit more at peace. Upon parting, somehow I felt compelled to give him a strong hug. Later that evening, he sent me a link to "Benedictus" - the cello music that he felt very fond of.
Recently, thinking about Ukraine, I had been wondering if he had continued his plan to in fact move to Ukraine and continue some of the work he described regarding justice reform. I had been considering emailing him. Based on our last conversation, I simply assumed that his cancer was well-handled, and he was on the road to recovery. I am shocked and very sad to have learned of his fate, cut short.
Below are the only photos I actually have of him, from 2016.
God bless you Gordon, you are missed.

Dear Shirley, Geoff and Sophie. Gordon was a dear friend and colleague, and Jack and I were devastated and so sorry to hear of his illness and death. Our hearts go out to you As you celebrate Gordon's life on the 20th, Jack and I will be remembering the many good times we had together. I feel lucky that I had the opportunity to work with Gordon in Winnipeg and in Ottawa. We developed a mutually supportive working relationship, and I greatly appreciated the special skills and talents he brought to our work. He was unsurpassed in his ability to lead workshops and meetings, and was acutely sensitive to the needs of our clients. He had an infectious sense of humor, and we laughed often. In addition to our working relationship, we became good friends. I will always remember the many times Gordon and Shirley welcomed me in their home, showing me kindness, and going out of their way to entertain me and make me comfortable. Jack and I have wonderful memories from the time we spent together in the Caribbean, as well as the trip the family made to our Victoria home shortly after my retirement. Our wish for all of you is that you find peace and strength in your memories of the many good times.
With love,
Anne and Jack Deines

Dear Scott family,
Thinking of you during this difficult time. Wonderful memories of being neighbours from 1966 to 1978 in Port Perry. During their younger years, the boys would gather and play road hockey with my twin brother on our patio nearly every night in the winter. My Mom would shut the outside light off when it was time for everyone to go home. I have searched through our "old" photos and this is the only picture I could find. It was taken in 1971. Thought it would be worth sharing.
May God grant you comfort and peace.

Wishing the Scott family the peace that brings comfort. This is so shocking. We had many great adventures together - backed packed all over Europe, Ireland and Egypt, many wild and crazy road trips in my TR6, room mates at university, my neighbour growing up in Port Perry - I'll have to document some of those stories. We'd lost touch since those days over 40 years ago as he'd moved away and had a job that took him globe trotting - but those memories still burn bright.
