Dear Brian, Ian, Chuck, Donna and Veronique: My deepest condolences to you and your families. I had the privilege of meeting all of you and I know Dianne loved you all. May you take comfort in knowing there is now one more angel looking down on you.
I am one of the PSW’s who had the privilege of visiting Dianne at her home. I have such good memories of my time spent with Dianne.
I very much enjoyed learning about Dianne and her life and listening to Dianne tell me about things. I heard stories of raising horses and pigs and mail order chickens. Dianne would tell me about adventures with her family and some of the mischief her younger siblings got into. She also told me of some mischief Brian got into. Dianne talked about wonderful staff that she worked with and also told me how, way back, she and a colleague did something they probably should not have done, but it made a nursing home resident happy and feel good, and illustrated Dianne’s great compassion.
Dianne and I spent many, many hours outside on the grounds, in the gardens. Dianne was so pleased to show me different things in the gardens and tell me stories. Dianne kept me fit with all that walking around the gardens. And sometimes we would just sit outside and sing at the top of our lungs, then laugh and giggle.
Dianne and I would look through the book that was put together by the cooking group Dianne cofounded. Dianne would tell me about the people from the group and about some of the dinner parties. Dianne also had her own binder of recipes that she kept. Dianne and I made a couple of things from her cookbook as well as other things. Cookies seemed to be a favorite of Dianne’s. She was quite the Cookie Monster.
Sometimes we would put on music in the background while Dianne and I coloured, did crafts, or just chatted. The odd time Brian would walk into one of our kitchen dance parties, with Elvis playing and Dianne and I laughing and having a good time.
Looking back, Dianne and I spent a lot of time laughing and having fun.
Dianne touched so many lives in such a good way, and I am so glad I had the chance to know her.

I’m truly sorry, Brian. Diane was such a likeable, straightforward person. I knew her as a social worker before I learned she was your wife, and I respected her for the way she advocated and demonstrated compassion for people in her care. Having the privilege to attend the staff parties you and Diane hosted at your home gave me the chance to get to see her amongst the gardens she so clearly loved. I hope you are able to continue to feel and see her in the beauty of nature. Sincere condolences.

I was so sad to hear the news today of Dianne’s passing. Aunt Barbara told me while I was there for a visit. Dianne had the best laugh I’ve ever heard and used to buy me Nancy Drew books for Christmas when I was a little girl. She was always smiling in my recollection of her. I’m sad that we lost touch after Mom & Dad passed away and am very sad to hear of the struggle Dianne faced with Dementia. Brian, your obituary for Dianne was beautiful and I could hear your voice as I read it. I am sending you and your family and all my Stackhouse family so much love. Dianne will never be forgotten. With love & sympathy, Lynn McHugh.

I loved the time I got to spend with both Dianne and you Brian. You were wonderful neighbours and good friends. Her gardens were truly incredible. I remember her laugh and the way that she always had an encouraging word for everyone. Thank you all for being part of my life.
