What Does It Mean When Someone Is In Hospice Care?

Many people have heard about hospice care but want to know more about exactly who is eligible for it and what it means when someone is in hospice care. Let's take a look at what it entails.

  • When a person is in hospice care, it means that he or she has a life expectancy of less than six months. This is one of the prerequisites of admission to hospice care.

  • The facility will require you to provide a certificate from a certified medical professional as proof the person’s terminal health condition. This is something you would need to acquire from the person’s doctor.

  • If a person's health begins to decline significantly, they may sometimes need more attention and care, than an ill person normally would. There are times when people who are nearing the end of their life suffer from extreme fatigue, are unable to move or talk or even see and hear properly. They may suffer from extreme weight loss problems and other health-related issues. In all of these situations, the ailing person can be put in hospice care.

  • Medical professionals generally recommend hospice care when a patient has had to undergo a number of ER visits or hospital stays within a short period. Since a hospice provides 24/7 care, it becomes a better option when you want to ensure that your loved is looked after well. It doesn’t always possible for many people to provide good care round the clock to an ailing family member, even if they want to and a hospice is a better setting to ensure that the person gets the attention and care they need at the end of their life.
