How to Deal With Holidays After the Loss of a Loved One

The loss of a loved one and grief can affect different people in different ways. There's no timeline or strict pattern when it comes to grieving so you can't expect to recover from it within a year. Holidays can be especially a painful because they're a time for celebration. People gather together and celebrate family, togetherness, and the holiday spirit, which can make your loss even more painful. Here are some suggestions that can help you get through the season without too much stress or grief:

Understand your limits

You might feel comfortable enough to attend a few family gatherings or parties but always keep your limits in mind. If you feel overwhelmed and can't bear crowds, make your excuses and leave. It's important to understand your limits and respect them. Forcing yourself to live through these social events may only cause additional stress.

Explore new places

Instead of staying in your home and in the same surroundings, travel to a good winter destination. A new place will allow you to create new memories and focus on something positive. It will allow you to explore regions that have no connection with your loss so you won't be faced with the constant loss associated with a loved one’s absence.

Create a new tradition

Holiday traditions can be a painful reminder of your loss but new traditions can be a great way to remember your loved one in a more positive manner. For example, some people revisit a positive memory like watching a movie. Others donate or volunteer for a local charity in the name of the deceased individual.
