Choosing the Perfect Songs for the Funeral Service

It’s important to remember that a funeral service is a celebration of life and a final moment to celebrate the deceased. When it comes to music selection at the service and memorial, it can sometimes be the most difficult decisions to make. Our funeral directors here at Wagg Funeral Home understand the importance of making sure that every aspect of the service is perfect. Our directors have compiled a few suggestions and things to consider when choosing the perfect song selection for the service.

Why is Song Selection so important?

Music is not only a therapy for some but is also a means of communication and expression. People are able to feel and express themselves by the lyrics, movement or instruments within a song. We are sure that there is at least one song that you can think of that when you hear it brings back memories and it immerses you in that moment. As well, don’t loose focus on the fact that the service is a celebration of life, what better way too celebrate the life of you loved one then by remembering them by their favourite song. Although a funeral is a moment of many emotions, by finding the perfect song we are hoping that the good memories will out way the sad, even for just a slight moment.

Things to consider when Choosing Appropriate Music for the Service

When you think of the word appropriate it may seem like you may be shifting towards the traditional, however if traditional is not like the deceased then it is important to pick something that fits their memory. Funerals tend to be sombre in nature, which is natural as it is gathering filled with many emotions, but having their favourite songs in the background or sung by the choir may be the perfect way to feel the presences of your loved one in the room. If you are unsure of what kind of music that your loved one liked, try checking some of their items like their phone or iPod, or CD collection. Look to other friends and family, for songs that represent memories to them.

When Do you Use the Songs During the Funeral Service?

There is no right and wrong time for the playlist to be on during the service, if you want some of their lower pace music to be playing in the background of the service that is your prerogative. In most services, the music would be playing before the service before people sit down and the service begins. Then throughout the service there may be small breaks where you may want to the choir to sing their favourite song, then you can have someone explain that memory as a precursor to the eulogy. At the end of the service you can also play their music as people are leaving.
