Planning for a funeral ceremony might be tricky. The average funeral cost rises as various alternatives for the funeral ceremony, caskets, vaults, embalming, or burial plots grow. Furthermore, most funeral houses and cemeteries require full payment at the time of the services. As per our experience at Wagg Funeral Home, this is the most challenging component of funeral preparation.

What Is Involved in Funeral Cost?

The total cost of a funeral may range from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands of dollars, depending on where you reside and the services you need. According to our study and market surveys, the typical cost of a funeral is:

  • If you want a typical funeral ceremony with a viewing and casket presentation, cremation costs between $7.5k and $9.5k.
  • Cremation typically costs from $4,000 to $6,000 and is complemented by a memorial ceremony in which the casket is absent.
  • Funeral and memorial ceremonies, including cremation, cost between $750 and $4,500.
  • A traditional funeral ceremony, including visitation and burial, might be between $12,500 and $17,500.
  • A funeral and burial may cost anything between $11,500 and $15,000. (no casket and no visitation).

Breakdown of the Average Funeral Cost

On average, a funeral costs $9,135. However, only typical funeral items, such as a casket and crypt, are provided. The costs of cemetery sites are not covered. Given the minimal payment for a burial site in a private cemetery (calculated at $2,000), the nationwide average of $11,000 for a typical funeral appears fairer.

Several things contribute to the ultimate cost of a funeral. Therefore it's essential to understand what's covered. A high-end coffin, for example, may cost $2,000-$10,000 or more. Your selections will have a direct impact on the ultimate cost of the funeral.

Funeral costs may vary significantly based on the style of burial vault and casket selected. Direct burial/cremation might be arranged for less than $1,000, including the cost of the cemetery. We encourage you to prepare a memorial ceremony, no matter how little, to commemorate your loved one's life and their passing.

Since many different factors are involved in planning a funeral, you should discuss your requirements with a funeral director, they will be able to provide you with the funeral cost information you need.
