Documentation To Have In Place Before Death

It may be challenging to come to terms with the very idea that you’ll ultimately pass away someday, however, death is inevitable. This fact makes it essential to have some important documents in place so your family doesn’t find themselves in a powerless and stressful situation. By designating heirs and powers of attorney you can decide who will make your medical decisions and who will receive your belongings and estate.

Documents To Have In Place

At Wagg Funeral Home we have seen that doing this can ease a lot of stress that families face after someone close to them passes. Some documentation to have in place before death includes:

1. Power Of Attorney For Healthcare

A healthcare POA (power of attorney) is a detailed document appointing an individual to make all your medical decisions when you are not in a position to. It can apply to various situations; for example, if you are temporarily unconscious or suffer a terminal illness. Choose someone trustworthy for this role.

2. Will

A will is a legal document that mentions your heirs, or the persons/organizations that will get your assets and belongings after your passing. Consult an experienced estate attorney when determining your assets and writing your will. Select an executor who will carry out your legal will after your demise. Ensure they’re willing to take on this responsibility and select an alternate executor to fill in in case the first person cannot fulfill their duties.

3. Living Will

A living will isn’t the same as a regular will or even a healthcare POA. A standard will become effective once you pass away while a living will apply in case you become incapacitated.

These are just a few of the documents you must have in place before death. If you need any other information, please call us and speak with the funeral director at Wagg Funeral Home. We can help you preplan a funeral and with information about the different services available.
