Important Facts To Know About Green Burials

While people prefer to follow tradition in the funeral services they plan, many families are moving away from conventional norms in this aspect. Some people like to pre-plan their service so that everything is, as they want it to be; others opt for green burials. This term keeps cropping up at different places. However, at Wagg Funeral Home, we have seen that most people are not aware of what it involves.

What Is A Green Burial?

People are increasingly becoming aware of the environment and look for ways to reduce their carbon footprint. Therefore, they make changes in the way they live, opting for energy-efficient building materials, appliances, and water-efficient landscaping practices.

This trend has also spread to the funeral service space. Because a traditional funeral involves using wood, formaldehyde, and concrete, it can be harmful to the environment. Here are some facts about how a green burial is different:

  • In a green burial, the body is not embalmed, which means there are no embalming fluids used
  • The mortal remains are buried in a biodegradable container
  • There is no grave liner or concrete vault
  • There is no concrete grave marker. If the family wants one, they plant a tree or use a natural stone feature
  • A sustainable land management system is used
  • Several indigenous plants and trees are installed in the cemetery where the green burial takes place
  • The plantings are managed and cared for using organic methods and products
  • The grounds have water-efficient irrigation systems and drought-resistant plants
  • The cemetery has energy-efficient lighting systems installed

All of these efforts go towards creating a more eco-friendly burial. Call us and speak with Wagg Funeral Home’s experienced funeral directors for any additional information. We can also help you pre-plan a funeral service and with details about the different services available.
