Social Media Meets Funeral Service- The Pros and Cons

Social media is intrinsically woven into the lives of most people in the modern-day. It isn't uncommon for families to use these platforms even when there is a death in their family, and they make announcements about it or put out details related to the funeral service. At Wagg Funeral Home, we recognize that there are many advantages and disadvantages to incorporating social media into this aspect of our lives. Let’s take a look at what they are:

The Pros

  • People are becoming increasingly mobile and moving to various cities, towns, and even countries and continents away from their hometown. They might lose touch with individual family members. In case of a death in the family, social media becomes a good way of informing them about the death.

  • Even if you inform a few people, they can network with others and keep the rest of the family members informed.

  • Sometimes, all it takes is a single post to relay the information to hundreds of people. It can save you some stress and time in calling every family member or close friend individually.

  • Some platforms like Facebook also allow you to create a memorial page for the decedent. It is an excellent way to remember someone close to you and uniquely honor them.

Cons

  • Sometimes, people feel that relaying information about death via social media is extremely impersonal.

  • Older family members are not very conversant with using social media and prefer being informed about the death over a call. If they hear about someone's death based on a social media post, it might hurt or insult them.

  • When you are planning to relay information about a death in the family via any social media platform, these are the pros and cons you need to keep in view.
